Girls: Wichita County, Syracuse win first-round sub-state games

Class 2A sub-state

Wichita County 61, Elkhart 34

At Syracuse, Tailar Bremer and Kaina Muncillas scored a combined 39 points in the first round of the sub-state tournament to help lead the Wichita County Lady Indians to victory over the Elkhart Lady Wildcats, 61-34.

By leading off with a big first quarter, the Indians got ahead of the Wildcats and stayed there. In the first quarter, the Indians were boosted by Bremer, Muncillas, and Katie Bailey, who scored 20, 19, and 15 points, respectively.

Of her 20 points, Bremer scored 10 in the third quarter.

The Wildcats' Kaitlyn McCabe led her team with 10 points as the only player in double digits.

The Indians will advance to play the winner of the No. 1-seeded Meade Lady Buffaloes and the No. 8 Sublette Lady Larks who play today.

Elkhart (10-10)--Sanchez 2 0-0 4, Hoskinson 2 0-0 4, Villa 2 0-2 4, Richardson 3 2-2 8, McCabe 4 2-3 10, Howe 1 0-3 2, Grieshaber 1 0-0 2. Totals 15 4-10 34.

3-point goals--Wichita Co. 5 (Muncillas 4, Bremer 1), Elkhart 0.

Syracuse 32, South Gray 24

At Syracuse, Kassie Baeza scored 13 points to lead the Syracuse Lady Bulldogs to a win over the South Gray Lady Rebels, 32-24.

At the end of the first, the Bulldogs were only five points ahead of the Rebels. Baeza went scoreless into the second quarter, but was the only player for the Bulldogs who was able to score in the second and third quarters. These were the only two quarters in which she scored, but her contribution was enough to keep the Bulldogs in the lead for the entire game.

The third-seeded Bulldogs will move on to play the No. 2-seeded Ness City Eagles.

South Gray (7-14)--Watson 1 0-0 2, W. Wright 2 0-5 2, Torres 2 1-4 6, Axtell 5 0-0 10, Dirks 0 2-4 2. Totals 10 3-13 24.

Class 1A-I sub-state

Hodgeman County 28, Deerfield 18

At Jetmore, the Hodgeman County Lady Longhorns defeated the Deerfield Lady Spartans in a defensive battle, 28-18.

In a game that only saw the first quarter score for the Longhorns reach the double digits, free throws and a strong finish are what kept the Longhorns in front of the Spartans.

While the Longhorns only put in half of their 14 attempted free throws, seven was enough in the sub-30-point game as the two teams' defenses only allowed 17 fields goals combined.

The Longhorns will progress to play the 10-8 Spearville Lady Lancers in the second round of the sub-state.

Hodgeman County (3-17)--Cohoon 0 1-3 1, Setzkom 2 1-2 6, Ochs 1 2-5 4, Ligett 5 3-4 13, Bradshaw 1 0-0 2. Totals 10 7-14 28.

Deerfield (0-20)--Tackett 2 0-0 6, Llamas 2 1-3 5, Ibarra 2 0-0 4, Diaz 1 0-0 3. Totals 7 1-3 18.

3-point goals--Hodgeman County 1 (Setzkom), Deerfield 3 (Tackett 2, Diaz).

Class 1A-II sub-state

Western Plains 46, Greeley Co. 30

At Tribune, the Western Plains Lady Bobcats defeated the Greeley County Lady Jackrabbits, 46-30.

After a rough start to the game in which they scored only three points, the Bobcats turned it around to come back from a deficit of eight points. They scored 15 points in the second quarter of the game to lead the Jackrabbits 18-15 at halftime.

The Bobcats then went on to score 14 points in both the third and fourth quarters to handily finish off the win.

Ruth Hair of Western Plains scored the most points of the game with 18.

The Bobcats will go on to play top-seeded Sharon Springs in the second round of sub-state play.
