Prep girls: Meade, Moscow pick up sub-state wins

Meade 69, Sublette 29

At Meade, Natalie Thompson scored 15 points to lead the Meade Lady Buffaloes to victory over the Sublette Lady Larks, 69-29 in Class 2A play.

After a huge first quarter for the Buffaloes, the Larks found themselves facing the challenge of coming back from a 19-point deficit. It was too big of a hole.

In the second quarter, the Buffaloes outscored the Larks 18-2 to bring the halftime score to 47-12 with the Buffaloes in the lead.

Also keeping the Buffaloes in such a commanding lead were Jaylin Stapleton and Beth Lewis, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Buffaloes will play the No. 2-seeded Wichita County Indians on Thursday. The Indians will be coming off of a 61-34 win over the Elkhart Wildcats.

Weskan 51, Healy 10

At Tribune, Kelsey Hale scored 26 to help the Weskan Lady Coyotes blowout the Healy Lady Eagles, 51-10 in Class 1A-II action.

Of the 13 free throws that were attempted by the Coyotes, 12 of them went into the basket.

In the first quarter, Hale scored 12 of her 26 points, and in the second quarter part of the slack was picked up by the rest of the Coyotes. This led to a 34-8 halftime lead for the Coyotes.

Out of the 11 fouls committed by the Coyotes, the Eagles were only able to shoot a total of three free throws.

The Coyotes will go on to play the No. 3 Dighton Hornets on Thursday. The Hornets will be heading into the game off of a first-round bye.

Fowler 60, Ashland 55

At Rolla, the Fowler Lady Goldbugs won a hard-fought game in overtime in the Class 2A sub-state tournament against the Ashland Lady Blue Jays, 60-55.

Nicole Friesen led the way with a team-high 25 points.

The Goldbugs were down by three points at intermission but were able to retake the lead, 41-36, heading into the final period.

The Jays were able to mount a comeback and tie the game to send it into overtime with a 15-10 fourth quarter.

Canaan Endicott of Ashland had a game-high 34 points for the Jays.

Mallory Bergkamp also added another 10 points for the Goldbugs.

Fowler will play the Bucklin Lady Red Aces (17-3), who had a bye, on Friday.

Garden Plain 60, Lakin 34

At Garden Plain, with Madison Schmeizer and Noelle Dooley both scoring a game-high 15 points, the Lady Owls defeated the Lakin Lady Broncs, 60-34, in the Class 3A sub-state tournament.

The Lady Owls held a nine-point lead at the end of the first period but the Broncs were able to close to within six by halftime.

From then on it would be all Lady Owls as they outscored the Lady Broncs by 20 points.

Mariah Watkins led the Lady Broncs in scoring with 12 points.

The Lady Owls will face the Holcomb Lady Longhorns on Friday.

Moscow 36, Rolla 32

At Rolla, with Kelsi Mueller leading the way with 15 points, the Moscow Lady Wildcats came out with a win in a nail biter with the Rolla Lady Pirates in the Class 1A-II sub-state tournament, 36-32.

The Lady Wildcats alternated their scoring totals for each period between 10 and eight points, and were able to go into halftime only up by three points, but were able to pull ahead by six points by the start of the final period.

Katie Murray, Kaleigh Barrett and Sarah Easterwood did all the scoring for the Lady Pirates with 12, 11, and nine points respectively.

Moscow will face off against the Ingalls Lady Bulldogs (17-4), who had a bye, on Friday.
