Girls: Hugoton escapes Goodland; Lakin rolls by Syracuse

Hugoton 41, Goodland 39

At Goodland, the No. 3-ranked Class 4A-Division II Lady Eagles of Hugoton just averted a big upset, escaping the Goodland Cowgirls 41-39 on Friday night in Great West Activities Conference action.

The Lady Eagles never could pull away from Goodland, leading just 12-10 after one quarter, 24-17 at halftime and then just 29-28 at the end of the third period.

A 12-11 edge in the fourth quarter was just enough to provide the Eagles the slender victory.

Amy Scott led the Lady Eagles with 11 points and was the lone double-figure scorer. The Lady Eagles made five 3-pointers and were 16 of 24 at the free throw line. Maddie Mayer also scored 11 points to lead Goodland's offensive output. The Cowgirls were just 7 of 14 at the charity stripe.

Lakin 47, Syracuse 33

At Syracuse, the Lakin Lady Broncs rode the scoring of Robin Ritsema and Mariah Watkins to a 47-33 victory over the host Lady Bulldogs 47-33 in Hi-Plains League action on Friday night.

Ritsema used her 6-1 height advantage to score 17 points while Watkins contributed 11 for Lakin, nine of those coming in the second half.

Lakin opened with a 12-5 lead after the first quarter, extended it to 22-12 at halftime and was ahead 36-26 after three periods.

Rachel Wilson topped the Syracuse scoring with nine points.

Kiowa Co. 58, So. Gray 35

At Greensburg, the Kiowa County Lady Mavericks took advantage of big scoring outbursts in the second and fourth quarters to race by the South Gray Lady Rebels 58-35 on Friday night.

Leading just 12-11 after one, Kiowa County outscored South Gray 16-4 to go up 28-15 at halftime. The teams battled to a 15-all standoff in the third, but Kiowa County then went on a 15-5 run in the fourth to make it a runaway.

McKenzie Heft led a balanced attack for Kiowa County with 19 points, Dena Liggett added 15 and Heather Melton contributed 10 for the Mavericks. Madi Dirks had 13 to pace the Lady Rebels.

Elkhart 57, SW Heights 51

At Elkhart, the host Lady Wildcats had just enough to hold off the Lady Mustangs of Southwestern Heights, 57-51, on Friday night in Hi-Plains League action.

Keyah Richardson led Elkhart's attack with 20 points while Yessenia Villa and Kacee Hoskinson added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Nayelly LaPoint led all scorers for Heights with 21 points while Jackie Loya added 11.

Sublette 48, Deerfield 14

At Sublette, with sophomore Brooke Briggs leading the way with 15 points, the Sublette Lady Larks breezed to an easy win over the Deerfield Lady Spartans, 48-14.

The Lady Larks jumped to a huge lead at the end of the first period, 21-3, and they played strong defensively for the rest of the game as the most points they allowed Deerfield to score in a period was six points in the third.

The leading scorer for the Lady Spartans was Mayra Llamas, who had seven points.

Payton Whaler added another 10 points for the Lady Larks.
