Lakin band Independent Follows turned up the decibels in Stevens Park Sunday night with some old and new rock and roll. The band, which draws its influences from heavy metal acts such as Metallica and Pantera, played original rock songs and classic crowd-pleasing covers.

The concert was a part of the Stevens Park Concert Series, sponsored by the Garden City Recreation Commission. All concerts are free to the public.

Independent Follows drummer Martin Jaymez-Garcia, Lakin, 19, said the concert provided a good opportunity for the band to get its name out. The group has another gig lined up July 23 at the Dodge City Raceway. Like any young band, Jaymez-Garcia said the band is trying to attract a following. The band has been together for a year.

Other Independent Follows members are Kyle Anderson 15, guitar, Kalen Anderson, 17, guitar, and Alex Anderson, 18, bass. Jaron "Squeak" Bell, 13, will replace bassist Alex at the next show.

Among the songs in the setlist, covers "Johnny Be Good" and "Wipe Out" had the crowd members' feet tapping and children dancing.

Louise Korbe and Jane Hendrickson said they attend the Sunday night concert series just about every week.

"It's nice to be able to get outside and into the park on Sunday nights," Korbe said.

Korbe said she liked the variety of the bands this summer.

"There's something for everyone, and it really shows the talent of some of our older and younger people," she said. "I'm looking forward to some of the upcoming concerts."

Korbe and Hendrickson usually set up their lawn chairs on the south side of the park away from the band so they can listen to the music but still maintain a conversation.

Susan Condit and her grandaughter, Eva, 6, usually listen from Condit's house across the street from the park. Sunday night, she and Eva decided to listen from the park.

"It's a great thing that the city does," Condit said. "I've enjoyed the concerts so far."

No concert is scheduled for next Sunday. On Saturday, though, the Garden City Municipal Band will play at the Lee Richardson Zoo during the city fireworks display. The music will begin at 8 p.m.
