Jesus Manuel 'Jessie' Montes
Jesus Manuel "Jessie" Montes, 78, a renown artist and former southwest Kansas resident, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, in El Paso, Texas.
He was born March 18, 1935, in Mexico and was one of 25 children in his family.¬
After coming to the United States in 1956 and becoming a naturalized citzen in 1972, he eventually moved to Dodge City, where he earned his GED diploma. He worked as a custodian at Dodge City High School, but also became well-known in southwest Kansas for unique art that he created from salvaged and recycled corrugated cardboard.
He is survived by two sons, Jessie A. Montes of Hope Mills, N.C., Marc A. Montes, Canon City, Colo.; three daughters, Elisa and Bertha Montes, both of Wichita, and Maria Diaz, of Dodge City; a brother, Jose Montes, of El Paso; four sisters, Aucencia and Francica Montes, both of El Paso, Marta Gomez, of Mexico, and Natalia Beckstrom of Garden City; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
At his direction, Montes' remains were cremated and no memorial service was held.
His ashes will be scattered at a later date by his family at an undisclosed location. Condolences may be extended to the family in care of Maria Diaz, 1700 S. 14th, Dodge City, KS 67801.
