On afternoons and evenings when it's cool enough, Jean Stroh enjoys sitting on her back porch and listening to the running water of her backyard pond.

Jean Stroh's backyard pond was featured Sunday during the annual Garden City Area Pond Association Garden Tour. Stroh has had a pond in her backyard for five years, and said it adds to the ambience of her home.

The ambience of her backyard and the shade cover of her deck provide a relaxing place for Stroh and any guests she invites over to entertain.

"I just like the water feature — to hear the water trickle is very calming," she said.

On Sunday, Stroh's pond was featured in the Pond and Garden Tour, an annual tour organized by the Garden City Area Pond Association. The tour featured ponds in various neighborhoods throughout the city and county.

Stroh, who has lived in Garden City since 1980, said she had been involved in the tour three or four years.

Her pond sits in the middle of her backyard, with rocks, plants and figurines surrounding it, and a bench nearby where a person can sit and watch the goldfish swim.

Vinca, water lilies and hyacinth sit in and around Stroh's pond. The water hyacinth floats on the water and provides food, oxygen and shade for the fish.

Mums and black-eyed Susans grow on the edges of the pond to provide color and landscaping, she said. Red cedar mulch surrounds the pond and flowers.

Stroh has lived in her house on Laurel Street for 25 years, and five years ago she decided to add a pond.

Prairie Wind Aquatics, 1412 W. Mary St., a pond store, dug out the pond, lined it and built it.

"I just let them take care of it," she said. Stroh said she uses the store for supplies and decor.

Stroh said once the pond was built and the landscaping was done, the upkeep of it hasn't been too hard.

Once summer temperatures yield to a cooler fall, Stroh said, she'll enjoy her backyard and deck more than just during the evenings.

"We've played cards and dominoes out here, and I sit here in the evening," she said. "It's just a nice place to be."
