The Garden City Community College football team rose five spots in the first regular season NJCAA poll on Tuesday.
The Busters routed Independence 67-0 in the season opener on Aug. 24 and then held off Cisco (Texas) Community College 35-21 on Aug. 31 to make a push up the ranks. In the preseason poll released one Aug. 13, Garden City was No. 17 in the poll behind a trio of KJCCC teams: Butler, Hutchinson and Coffeyville. Coffeyville has been run over in two losses this season, including the season opener to Hutchinson, and Hutchinson was blasted by No. 2 Navarro College 41-16 on Aug. 31, dropping Hutch to No. 13 and Coffeyville off the ranks entirely. Now, only No. 4 Butler is ahead of Garden City in the KJCCC with its two lopsided wins this season.
Top ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College kept its place at the top of the rankings with its 63-14 dismantling of Coahoma Community College.
After the Busters' win over Cisco, freshman quarterback Akeem Jones was named the KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Jones threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another two scores, leading the Busters to the non-conference win.
