Laurie Sisk/Telegram Adam Brungardt, Garden City, stands in for FoghatÕs injured bass player on Saturday night at the Finney County Fairgrounds.

Though Saturday night's party atmosphere may have caused a few memory lapses for some in the audience at Mosaic's Rock 'N Roll Rally concert, Adam Brungardt had a night he'll not soon forget.

Foghat, best known for the song "Slow Ride," brought its iconic sound to the stage, but was missing a key member, bassist Craig MacGregor.

Due to a wrist injury, MacGregor wasn't able to play the show, and the band needed to find a replacement.

Foghat drummer Roger Earl was in Samy's Spirits and Steakhouse Saturday morning when a person in the restaurant overheard Earl talking about the band's predicament. The person made a recommendation, but the proposed bassist was unable to play, but did recommend a friend of his: Brungardt.

Brungardt, a 28 year-old machinist at Kanamak Hydraulics Inc., was at a karate tournament when he got the call to play for Foghat. He rushed over to the Clarion Inn and began practicing with the band, he said.

"I had to learn six songs in five hours. It was really difficult," Brungardt said.

Despite the quick learning curve, Brungardt held his own, Foghat guitarist Bryan Bassett said.

"He rushed over to the hotel and practiced with us all day. He just did a wonderful job," Bassett said. "We're all real proud of him."

Bassett wasn't alone in his praise for the local musician.

"We had a last-minute substitute bass player who did a real adequate job," Foghat lead singer Charlie Huhn said. "He's not even a bass player; he's a guitar player. He had a crash course in learning all our songs. He did really well."

Though Brungardt admits he may have been a little rough during his stint with Foghat, it was "absolutely a dream."

"I love Foghat, and I was so excited just to come here, let alone be able to play in the band," he said. "It was just amazing."
