This weekend, Garden City residents can attend a Veterans Memorial on Memorial Day and go to the opening of Garden City's Municipal Big Pool.

The Veterans Memorial will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. The program includes music by the Garden City Municipal Band, presentation of colors, a flag raising ceremony, an invocation by Jon Becker, First Baptist Church of Holcomb, and several speakers.

There also will be a 21-gun salute and retirement of the colors.

Phil Babcock, a member of the American Legion, said the memorial usually sees a good size crowd and that the public is welcome.

The public also is welcome this weekend to the opening of the Big Pool. The pool opens its doors for the summer on Saturday.

The pool's hours are 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursdays and 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $1 per person and an additional $1 for a slide pass.

The pool, located at 504 Maple St., holds 2.2 million gallons of water and includes a kiddie pool, shade umbrellas and picnic tables.

The Sandhill Vaqueros Saddle Club Horse Show also is scheduled this weekend at the Finney County Fairgrounds grandstand arena. The horse show will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and start at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Ron Schreibvogel, who helps organize the event, said the show is free to the public and includes events such as barrels, holes, flag, key races, horsemanship and western pleasure on Saturday. Sunday's events include pole bending, straight barrels and steep barrels.

The age groups include 1 to 9 years, 10 to 13, 14 to 17, women, men, senior women and senior men.

Schreibvogel said this is the biggest show that the Saddle Club has this year, and the public is invited to attend free of charge. In case of inclement weather, it will be moved to the indoor arena at the fairgrounds.

Also this weekend:

* There will be a Rope for the Cure event in Scott City on Friday. The team roping event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Scott County Indoor Arena. The event is free to the public, and cash and prizes will be awarded for each round. The ropers pay $50 to participate, and all proceeds benefit Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.

* The 190th ARW Kansas Air National Guard from Forbes Field, Topeka, will be conducting numerous flyovers for Memorial Day. The aircraft, a KC-135 R, will be flying over the following towns during the following approximate times on Monday: Scott City, 10:31 a.m.; Syracuse 10:42 a.m.; Lakin 10:48; Deerfield 10:49; Holcomb 10:51 a.m.; Garden City 10:52.
