On Tuesday morning the Garden City USD 457 Board of Education will hold a short meeting to pay bills and consider approving a series of agreements, a grant from the state and several other items on the agenda.
The Board will consider approval of a district wellness plan, consider accepting a Migrant Summer Services Grant from the Kansas State Department of Education and consider approving teacher and student handbooks for several schools.
Superintendent Rick Atha said the short meeting is a routine one where the board approves the measures around the same time every year.
The Migrant Summer Services grant is for $26,000 and is for services that the district provides to children whose families move often to find work in agriculture.
This year, migrant students attend classes at Victor Ornelas Elementary School in the mornings to receive help on reading and math. Janie Perkins, USD 457's coordinator of supplemental programs, said the money will go towards providing teacher salaries, snacks and classroom materials for students, along with some transportation costs to bus students to Victor Ornelas.
In the past, the program was held at East Garden Village, but was moved to Victor Ornelas this year because of an increase in the amount of children in the program, Perkins said.
Often, children in migrant families either come into the school year late or leave early, so providing summer classes helps the students have more academic success during the school year, Perkins said.
She added that the program also encourages literacy.
The only bid on the agenda for the board to consider is for kitchen equipment for Garfield Elementary School.
If a bid is approved, the school will receive a milk cooler, microwave, prep cart and work table, a freezer and an oven.
When: 7:30 a.m. Tuesday
Where: Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming St.
