Drive 4UR School
set for Saturday
at USD 457 office
The Garden City High School basketball teams will host a Drive 4UR School event from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming St.
Burtis Motor Co., Inc. of Garden City is sponsoring the event to benefit the basketball programs at GCHS. There will also be a car wash and inflatable bounce houses for the kids during the event.
Persons are encouraged to come and test drive the latest Ford vehicles and earn money for the Buffaloes' boys and girls basketball programs. Participants must be 18 or older and have a valid driver's license.
For every test drive, $20 is contributed to the GCHS basketball teams. There is a limit of one test-drive per household. There will be no sales information made to drivers.
Part of the proceeds go to help pay for equipment or road travel.
Military Tribute Night for Buffs
Friday night's Garden City High School vs. Woodward, Okla., football game at Buffalo Stadium will be Military Tribute Night.
There will be a tailgate party prior to the game in the west parking lot of the stadium complex.
All military personnel, active or retired, will eat free and will have free admission into the 7 p.m. game against the Boomers.
There will be a halftime introduction of military personnel, and the Buffs also will wear a military insignia sticker on their helmets.
GC Special Olympics gets $2k grant
The Garden City Special Olympics organization has received a grant in the amount of $2,000 from the SDSI Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit corporation founded in 1989.
The grant will be used to help fund the cost of providing competitive sports programs to local athletes at no cost to the participants. The grant also helps cover travel costs to area and state competitions.
SDSI Foundation, Inc., is a supporting organization for Southwest Developmental Services, Inc., and has received donations in the past from individuals, estates and other organizations. The foundation has distributed funds to other organizations, including Russell Child Development Center, High Plains Educational Cooperative, Miles of Smiles and Crossroads Center.
In 2012, SDSI Foundation, Inc. distributed more than $92,000 for these needs. Since 1996, the program has distributed more than $1 million.

Redhawk baseball camp set for fall
The Bill Wilson fall baseball prep camp will be held each Saturday, beginning Sept. 21 and concluding on Oct. 26.
Wilson, head baseball coach at Garden City High School, will run the camp each day from 9 a.m. to noon. The program is open to anyone from the fifth through eighth grade. The camp will include baseball specific instruction, as well as combine drills. There will be both indoor and outdoor practices.
Camp fee is $99 for Redhawk Academy members and $149 for non-members. Registration forms are available at the Academy, 601 Lake Ave., Garden City, and must be returned by Sept. 20 with camp fees. GCRC sponsors PP&K event
The Garden City Recreation Commission will be sponsoring the 2013 local NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition at 1 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Garcia Soccer Fields.
Contestants can pre-register at the GCRC office, 310 North Sixth St., or can register at 12:30 p.m. on the day of the competition.
Parents must bring a copy of the participant's birth certificate for age verification. There is no registration fee.
