Liberal High School football coach Cliff Abbott and Liberal High School have agreed to part ways.

That announcement came in a Thursday news release from the offices at USD 480 in Liberal.

"USD 480 would like to thank coach Abbott for his leadership and his time spent at Liberal High School," the release stated.

Abbott spent three years at the helm of the Redskins football program, with the team struggling to a 9-19 overall record. During that time, the Redskins won one game in the Western Athletic Conference, but made the Class 5A playoffs this past season with a 4-5 overall record. However, they lost to Bishop Carroll in the opening round.

Abbott, a Liberal native, owns a construction company in Liberal.

"We appreciate coach Abbott's dedication to the football program and his passion to the Liberal community," the news release said.

USD 480 and Liberal High School will begin accepting applications immediately for Abbott's replacement.

In the three seasons Abbott's teams faced Garden City, the Buffs won convincingly by scores of 52-21 (2011), 37-14 (2012) and 61-20 (2013). In this past season's game at Liberal, senior Greyson Tempel set a school record of nine touchdowns, five of which were rushing and four passing.
