Dighton teams win

The Dighton boys and girls basketball teams won opening-round games on Tuesday at the Castle Rock Classic in Quinter.

The Hornets boys dominated host Quinter in its first-round contest, winning 55-24, while the Lady Hornets rolled past Wheatland/Grinnell, 50-23.

Those victories move the teams into Friday's semifinals, with the boys set to face Hoxie at 7:30 p.m. while the girls also will face Hoxie in a 6 p.m. semifinal test.

Boys

Matthew Mulville scored 17 points and Sam Moomaw added 11 to propel the Hornets to their 55-24 victory over Quinter in the first-round of the Castle Rock Classic at Quinter on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hornets got off to a quick start, taking an 18-5 lead after the first quarter and built it to 29-13 by halftime. It was 44-22 after three quarters and Quinter could only manage a field goal in the final eight minutes.

Six other Hornets cracked the scoring column for new coach Dean Cramer. Junior Brett Crist scored 18 for the 'Dogs.

Girls

Senior Leslie Speer led the Lady Hornets with 18 points, including 12 in the final two quarters, to lift the Lady Hornets to their convincing victory over Hoxie.

Speer was the lone double-figure scorer for coach Amy Felker, but six other Lady Hornets got into the scoring column.

The Lady Hornets were ahead just 8-7 after one quarter but then outscored the Lady Indians 16-9 in the second quarter for a 24-16 halftime lead.

Paige Ramey led Hoxie with 10 points.
