Kearny County officials said speed was a factor in a fatal one-car accident Tuesday morning that killed a 46-year-old Lakin man.

The accident occurred at about 2:35 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 50 in Kearny County, just two miles east of Lakin. When officials arrived at the accident, the body of Michael Paul Perez was found in a pasture in direct line between the overturned vehicle and where it left the roadway.

Perez was taken to Kearny County Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Kearny County Undersheriff Dave Horner said it was estimated Perez was driving "in excess of 100 mph," and there was no evidence he was wearing a seat belt.

Horner said the crash is still under investigation.
