Student seeks Kansas details
Dear readers,
Hi, my name is Kayla P. I am a fifth-grade student at Harlan Intermediate School in Harlan, Iowa. My class is studying the history and geography of the United States. I chose the state of Kansas because I love the Kansas City Chiefs. I would really appreciate it if you could send me maps, souvenirs and any information on your state.
My teacher, Mrs. Newlin, would like a car license plate for a school project, if possible.

Know impact of sales tax
Valuation notices for 2013 have started hitting the mailboxes of all property owners. Are you shocked by the increases in appraised and assessed values of your property? If you are, you're not alone.
Coming up on the April 2 voting ballot, there will be a proposal to renew the current 1/2 cent sales tax. There are conversations amongst the citizens of Garden City concerning the effects on our community should this 1/2 cent renewal not pass. Some of those effects include cuts to our police department, future property tax increases, closing of the Labrador Fire Station, cuts for parks maintenance, possible closure of our zoo with animals having to be transferred and cuts to the street/road department.
Whether this passes or not is going to be up to the property owners. There is a pamphlet at the city building that one can pick up for information. That pamphlet should also be included with the next mailing of the utility bills. It'll be short notice to probably many people, but better than nothing.

Simple ways to avoid a ticket
Regarding the comments and notes to the paper on the Garden City police traffic enforcement, may I suggest the following:
How to avoid a traffic ticket, 101 ...
Drive within the speed limit. (The word on the signs is LIMIT, look it up.)
The word on STOP signs is STOP, not a suggestion. Also, look it up.
Traffic lights are pretty much self-explanatory.
Drive with seat belts hooked up (passengers, too).
Drive with children, required to be, in a child seat properly installed.
Use turn signals when you want to make a turn and use them when changing lanes (vehicles have been equipped with them since the '50s).
Drive with headlamps on, low beam, during dusk, dawn, fog and raining/snowing conditions, also any time wipers are used (sort of a no-brainer).
Some basic thoughts, actually traffic laws, and you may never have to worry about getting a citation.
Gee, what a concept. Pretty simple...
