Joe A. Palacio Sr. 86, Garden City, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.

Joe A. Palacio Sr. 86, Garden City, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.

He was born Nov. 10, 1926, to Carmen and Benita Palacio in Swink, Colo.

On May 16, 1948, he married Guadalupe D. "Lupe" Duran in La Junta, Colo. She died on Dec. 4. 2005.

Mr. Palacio worked at the sugar beet factory in La Junta. In the 1950s, he and his wife moved to the Garden City, where he worked as a farm laborer. He began working at Farmland Industries in the 1970s and also worked for the Garden City Co-op and the State of Kansas. He retired in 1992.

Mr. Palacios was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, building things with wood, working on old cars and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two brothers, Mike and Salvador Palacio; two sisters, Adelina Pantoya and Mary De La Riva; and a grandson.

Survivors include five sons, Joe Palacio Jr. of Pearland, Texas, and Louis, Robert, Art and Anthony Palacio, all of Garden City; two daughters, Sandra Herrada of Garden City and Gloria Garcia, Grand Junction, Colo.; four sisters, Pauline Guerrero, Josie Romero and Rosie Munoz, all ofLa Junta, and Ramona Sanchez of West Virginia; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand funeral Home in Garden City.
