Wilma Jean Holt Davis
HUTCHINSON — Wilma Jean Holt Davis entered immortality on February 2, 2012, at Good Samaritan Society - Hutchinson, Village in Hutchinson, Kansas, where she had been a resident since 2003.
She married Rev. Wesley Homer Davis on September 1, 1949, in Springfield, Mo. Wes departed this life in January of 2003. They are survived by their children and spouses, Jon and Martha Davis, St. Louis, Mo., and Brian E. Davis and his wife, Anne Lauer, Hutchinson, Kansas. Her body was bequeathed to Kansas University Medical Center for medical research as was Wes' body.
Jean was born on June 10, 1923, in Carl Junction, Mo., to Rev. Floyd and Bertha Holt. She was the oldest of their 6 children (Milford, Roland, Virginia, Lois and Stan). She received a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Southwest Missouri State University and met her husband during her graduate studies at Garrett Theological Seminary at Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill., where she studied church music and education. As a Christian Education Specialist, she was sought out as a gifted teacher at Schools of Christian Mission around the country. She was active in United Methodist Women at the churches they served: Wellington, Leon, Jennings/Prairie Chapel, Deerfield, South Hutchinson, Hugoton and Anthony in the Kansas West Conference. After retirement, they served the Clayton/Norcatur/Lyle Parish.
Jean was active in the Federation of Music Clubs and was a piano and organ teacher. She was also active in scouting, serving as both a Den Mother and Scout Master. Throughout their years of ministry together, they were sought out as youth group leaders, not only in the Church, but in their communities.¬
Her son, Jon, said, "I will remember my mother's love for God as expressed in a life that lived out her Christian faith in thought, word and deed." According to her son, Brian, her faith and belief was reflected in the writing of one of her favorite poets, Khalil Gibran, whose writings intermixed Christianity, Islam, Sufism, Judaism and Hinduism. Gibran wrote, "You are my brother, and I love you. I love you when you prostrate yourself in your mosque, kneel in your church, pray in your synagogue. [We] are sons of one faith — the Spirit."
One of her favorite places to vacation was at "Whispering Pines" a small piece of land she and Wes owned in Rye, Colorado. For them, the beauty of the mountains and nature affirmed the presence of God. Her remains will be scattered at United Methodist Camp Lakeside north of Scott City, Kansas, as was done for Wes, at a future date.
A memorial service will be held at South Hutchinson United Methodist Church, South Hutchinson, Kan., on Friday, April 20, at 11 a.m. Her sons and their wives ask that memorials be sent to The Good Samaritan Society - Hutchinson Village, 810 East 30th, Hutchinson, Kansas 67502-4398 because of the excellent care she received there the last 6 years of her life.
