An injury accident Tuesday afternoon that blocked traffic on Kansas Avenue for two and half hours has put an Ingalls man in a Wichita hospital, police said.
Robert Irsik, 56, was flown from St. Catherine Hospital to a Wichita hospital following the collision at the intersection of Kansas Avenue and Center Street at about 1:40 p.m.
According to police, Glenda Winters, 60, Garden City, was eastbound on Kansas Avenue in her Ford Expedition. Irsik was traveling west on the same road in his pick-up when he crossed the center line of Kansas Avenue and veered into Winters' lane, causing a head-on collision, said Garden City police Sgt. Michael Reagle.
Winters, who was extricated from her vehicle by fire department officials, was treated and released from St. Catherine for bruises and minor lacerations. Police said Irsik sustained four broken ribs, a punctured lung, a broken pelvis, and a possible broken leg. He was taken to Via Christi St. Francis Hospital. He was listed in critical condition this morning.
Both vehicles were destroyed and neither driver was wearing a seat belt, Reagle said. The cause of the accident still is under investigation.
