AP: Shockers rally past Sycamores, 76-70

Published 2/8/2010 in Sports

WICHITA (AP) -- Clevin Hannah scored 16 points and hit clutch 3-pointers that ignited a furious rally as Wichita State recovered to beat undermanned Indiana State 76-70 Saturday night.

The Shockers (20-5, 9-4 Missouri Valley) trailed the hot-shooting Sycamores by 15 points with 9 minutes to play. J.T. Durley scored 14 of his 15 points in the second half. Toure Murry also had 15 for the Shockers.

Indiana State (14-10, 6-7) suited up just eight players and was without three of its top four scorers due to injuries. That included leading scorer Harry Marshall, who suffered a stress fracture in his right foot Wednesday night and torched Wichita State for 29 points on Jan. 13. The eight Sycamores who played entered the game averaging a combined 41.6 points.

But, shooting better than 62 percent in the first 31 minutes and getting a team-high 16 points from Jordan Printy, Indiana State built a 58-43 lead.

That's when Wichita State's three leading scorers got it going. As he often has, Hannah sparked his team with timely shooting. His 3-pointer with 8:33 to play started a 20-5 run. The stretch included six points from Durley plus Murry going for a 3-pointer and a runner that tied it 63-63 with 3:57 remaining.

Just 34 seconds later, two free throws by Durley gave the Shockers their first lead since 3-0. Hannah followed with a steal and a layup.

Indiana State recovered to draw within two points twice, but Hannah's 3-pointer with 1:25 remaining made it 72-67, and the Sycamores got no closer.

Stunned to be trailing by nine at halftime, Wichita State twice appeared to start game-changing rallies in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Shockers cut their deficit to 39-35 and 45-40, but Indiana State answered each time. Three-pointers from Rashad Reed and Koang Doluony were part of a 12-2 run that put the Sycamores back in control, leading 57-42 with 9:40 remaining.

With its injury problems, Indiana State got off to a perfect start. Two 3-pointers by Printy sparked a 15-1 run that gave the Sycamores a 15-4 lead.

Indiana State stayed hot while Wichita State was ice-cold. The Sycamores shot 8 of 11 while the Shockers were 2 of 16, resulting in a 21-6 Indiana State advantage.

Layups from Reed, Josh Crawford and Printy pushed the lead to 27-11. Printy had 10 first-half points, while teammate Carl Richard led all scorers with 12.

Graham Hatch keyed Wichita State's push to get back into the game, scoring eight points in the final 10 minutes of the half. Indiana State still led 37-28 at the break.
