A 17-year-old Garden city boy arrested in connection with the death of a 16-year-old Deerfield girl will remain in custody, after he waived his right to a detention hearing Tuesday afternoon.

Joaquin Deanda, 1009 N. Fourth St., was arrested Sunday on allegations of first-degree murder, rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and felony obstruction of legal process in connection with the death of Julia Quintana.

Quintana's body was found in a Dumpster on Dec. 16 in the west alley behind Deanda's residence, after she went missing Dec. 14. Evidence from an autopsy disclosed that Quintana died due to suffocation, sustained a broken neck and was sexually assaulted, police said.

Deanda, a former classmate of Quintana's at the New Outlook Academy, 1401 Jones Ave., was held at the Southwest Juvenile Detention Center, 507 W. Santa Fe St., before he was moved to the Finney County Jail Tuesday. Police said the two individuals were acquaintances at school.

Deanda appeared in the Finney County Courthouse through video-teleconference. The lawyer assigned to represent the juvenile is Doug Spencer, from Oakley.

Deanda's mother, Margorie Romero, and a set of grandparents were present Tuesday. Romero also lives at the Fourth Street residence and is not a suspect, police said. She declined to comment.

The next hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Jan. 13.
