Holcomb's Longhorns utilized a fast start in Friday night's Great West Activities Conference road test at Hugoton, and eventually rolled to a 79-47 victory.

The Lady Longhorns, meanwhile, lost a tough 52-48 decision to the Lady Eagles, in a battle between the top two teams in the GWAC.

Coach Chad Novack's boys erupted for 29 points in the first quarter to Hugoton's 13 and then extended the lead to 47-29 at halftime. It was a 63-37 margin after three quarters.

"I thought the kids played really well and they shared the ball well," Novack said of his team's 26 assists. "They were doing a good job of looking for each other."

The Longhorns had three players in double figures, paced by Trey Sleep's 25 points. Conner VanCleave added 15 and Heath Tucker chipped in with 13.

Holcomb is now 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the GWAC. Hugoton is 6-7 overall.

Next up for the Longhorns will be the much-anticipated Finney County battle with neighbor Garden City. The third game of this young series will be at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday following the girls' 6:30 p.m. tip-off.

In the girls' battle for the top spot in the GWAC, Hugoton got 17 points from Katy Heger and 16 from Amy Scott to knock off the previously No. 1 team in the league.

Holcomb led early 12-7 and then trailed 25-24 at halftime. The Lady Longhorns used a 19-14 third-quarter margin to take a 43-39 lead into the final period, but Hugoton rallied with a 13-5 advantage in the final quarter.

For Holcomb, junior Taylor Deniston scored a game-high 31 points, including hitting five 3-pointers and going 6 of 7 at the free throw line. Both teams are now 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the GWAC.
