LAKIN - Back and forth. Back and forth.
Like a giant pendulum swinging in a long, slow arc, that's how the offenses ran for much of the first three quarters between Lakin and Holcomb.
Unfortunately for Holcomb, time ran out as they fell to the Broncs 9-0 in their Class 3A district game Friday night.
Lakin (5-3) ran its district record to 2-0, while Holcomb went to 1-1, finding themselves in a must-win situation next week.
Neither team could find the end zone for nearly 36 minutes before Lakin quarterback Dylan Shalberg found the right pylon and broke the plane on a four-yard keeper with seven seconds left in the third quarter to give his team their only touchdown of the night.
"We faked the halfback and then I kept it and rolled out. I could look to pass, but I decided to keep it," Shalberg said. "It worked out for us and we scored."
It was as simple as that. It would have been easier if, in the middle of the fourth quarter, Shalberg's touchdown pass to Zach Reed hadn't been called back on a penalty.
But thanks to a key punt to Holcomb's 6-yard line by Colby Hamel, the Longhorns found themselves pinned deep. On the first play, Kalen Anderson and Caden Helberg sandwiched quarterback Clay Gilbert in the end zone for a safety and the nine-point lead.
Shalberg intercepted Gilbert's final pass attempt with 53 seconds remaining to seal the win.
"This is a huge confidence booster," Shalberg said. "This will help us with momentum going into next week and into the playoffs."
Lakin assistant coach Blain White was all smiles after this rivalry win. The offensive line was critical in the victory, he said.
"We came out and were able to establish the line of scrimmage," he said. "Our backs read the holes well. Overall, I thought our effort was outstanding."
For Holcomb, coming off a big win the week before against Southwestern Heights, this was a setback.
"We didn't deserve to win the game tonight," Holcomb coach Jerry Johnson said. "We killed ourselves too many times, and we had too many mistakes. Lakin didn't; they were the better team tonight."
One of the Holcomb (3-5) mistakes was a first half fumble at the 2-yard line, giving Lakin the ball.
"(Lakin) played smart. They made the game shorten up," Johnson said. "They ground the ball at us. They knew we couldn't do anything offensive-wise."
Holcomb plays Cimarron on Thursday.
"We're still in it if we beat Cimarron," he said. "We're still in the playoffs then. It's not what we set out to do at the beginning of the season, but it's still something."
Lakin plays at home Thursday against Southwestern Heights.

To SC
So, if got this right, you used to live in Holcomb but you spent at least your high school years in Hutchison and was on the football team that won the state championship all four years 2004, 2005, 2006, & 2007 (I got this from the KSHSAA website). And now you live in Colorado. If this is true, then congratulations to the Hutchison teams. I can't say congratulations to you because who knows what you had to do with this. You could have been the water boy for all we know. It seems if you were so great you would still be playing football in college somewhere. Take your glory, get over yourself and move on. What the Holcomb Football Team does or does not do is not your business and your opinion does not matter. In other words Shut Up already.

GET A LIFE
SC, yea I am pretty sure you did win 4 state titles and that is y u are now reading this newspaper and leaving negative comments on a team that is really young. Gilbert may be a stud if u works at it since he is only a freshman. Lets wait till next year when Scott City loses most of their players and see how good they are. Also looks like those state titles got u somewhere and lets see if u can actually prove it.

I know what it takes to win a state title, I did it with Hutchinson like all four years I was there!

Gilbert a stud? That a comment only a fool would make. Holcomb will never have a stud on the football they never have they never will. Coach Johnson is so obsessed with blowing teams out that he forgets that winning 3 to 0 is the same as winning 300 to 0. Holcomb is a joke Scott City is a powerhouse that Holcomb can never beat and let's be serious, the last time Holcomb won a playoff game it was against Elkhart, so that sums it all up and I wish the best luck to the cross country because they actaully bust their tail to get better and "Actually win a state title which can't happen with Johnson!"

Football or cheerleader?
BP, you are close, but not quite there. SC wasn't on the team, he couldn't get on the cheerleading team, let alone be the mascot. That's because SC has the lights on, but nobody is home.

Hilarious
R u serious SC? Of course a freshman QB will suck but at least he is starting and will eventually will be a stud in 2 to 3 years. As for not making the playoffs, they will since their district was the worst out of any district. Bet it is more than u ever did in high school
Posted by: BP on 10/29/2009
what doin
That freshman qb is my cousin and hes a beast and whoever sc is a nobody

SC
What do you know, Holcomb loses to Lakin? Hard to believe, well not really since Holcomb sucks and will not make the playoffs and if they do Norton will kill em. And that freshman quarterback what a joke just like the longhorns season.
