LAKIN — A 19-year-old man pleaded innocent Tuesday to charges stemming from the stabbing of another teenager at a party on the Fourth of July in southwest Kansas.

Cody Joe Rosales pleaded innocent to aggravated battery and criminal damage to property before District Judge Philip Vieux in Kearny County District Court.

Kearny County Attorney Dennis Jones said a trial date has not been scheduled yet.

Rosales was arrested July 5 at his home in Lakin after he was reportedly involved in an altercation with Garden City resident Tyson Phillis, 18, early July 4.

Kearny County Sheriff's officers responded 4 a.m. July 4 to the Kearny County Hospital after Phillis arrived there with multiple stab wounds to the abdomen. The sheriff's office reported the stabbing occurred at a party at a home in southwest Lakin.

Rosales is accused of puncturing a tire on Phillis' vehicle when Phillis tried to leave. Phillis was headed to Garden City, about 24 miles east of Lakin, but never made it out of Lakin due to the punctured tire. A passer-by took him to the hospital, and he was transferred to a Garden City hospital, where he was treated and released.
