Smith resigns as Garden City High School football coach
Published 11/11/2009 in Breaking
By The TelegramAfter eight years as head coach of the Garden City High School football program, Mike Smith announced his resignation in a press conference Wednesday afternoon at the high school.
In a statement prepared by Director of Athletics Bill Weatherly, the resignation is effective at the end of the 2009-2010 school year.
"Coach Smith and I came to a mutual agreement in accepting his resignation," Weatherly said in his prepared statement. "... Our search for a new head football coach will begin immediately for the 2010-2011 school year."
Smith resigns his position with a 36-40 record at GCHS. Over the past three years, in which the Buffs missed the playoffs, Smith's squads went a combined 12-14.
While head coach at GCHS, Smith led the Buffaloes to one Western Athletic Conference title and took them to the playoffs on three different occasions — the best finish being a loss to Hutchinson in the Class 6A semifinals in 2005.
Weatherly said Smith will remain as the GCHS head track and field coach and as a high school physical education teacher.
