Garden City wrestlers earn state all-academic honors

The Garden City High School wrestling team, fresh off its first Class 6A state championship in 14 years, also has proven itself as champions in the classroom.

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association has announced that the Buffs' wrestlers, who compiled a team cumulative grade-point average of 3.2, had 13 members named to the All-Academic first team.

That group included Michael Prieto, Efrain Sanchez, Matt Urrutia, Alec Castillo, Tevin Briscoe, AJ Hurtado, Trevor Kennedy, Chris Adler, Zac Finch, Anthony Gardner, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, Sam Reyes and Samson Aldaco.

"I am really proud of these young men," GCHS head coach Carlos Prieto said. "The term student-athlete truly applies to these guys. It just shows that they are not only champions on the mat, but also in the classroom."

The Buffs dominated the Class 6A state tournament two weeks ago, winning the title by more than 40 points.

"I couldn't be more proud of how hard these young men worked both on the mat and in the classroom," Prieto said. "The community should be very proud of these accomplishments."
