Goddard High School used two goals within a 60-second time frame in the first 10 minutes to blank the Garden City Lady Buffaloes 2-0 Tuesday in the opening round of the Goddard/Bishop Carroll Soccer Tournament.
The Lady Buffs (0-2) were playing without starting goalkeeper sophomore Ashlee Richman, who had to sit out the game after being handed a red-card violation in their March 25 loss at Wichita Northwest.
"We missed our goalkeeper, but we just had to do what we had to do," said GCHS head coach Joaquin Padilla. "We didn't play very well in the first part of the game, but after that I thought we played much better, especially on defense."
The two Lady Lions' goals came in the eighth minute from Sydne Harpenau on an unassisted rebound shot, and then in the ninth minute when Makenzie Klaassen hit Kylie Logan on a cross for the final goal of the game.
"We just didn't play up to what we needed," Padilla said.
Battling a wind in the first half, the Lady Buffs had the wind at their back in the second half, but they couldn't get any of their seven shots to find the Goddard net.
"We had some good shots, but they just missed," Padilla said. "I thought we played well enough in the final 20 minutes, but it was just that bad start."
Goddard took eight shots at backup freshman goalkeeper Evonni Servantes, who recorded three saves. Goddard goalkeeper Kylee Lawrence had four saves for the Lady Lions.
The Lady Buffs will head back to Goddard on Thursday for a 5 p.m. consolation game, most likely against Buhler which was trailing Goddard Eisenhower 3-0 in the first half of that first round game late Tuesday.
