The Garden City High School Lady Buffs soccer team evened its early season record at 1-1 with a dramatic 5-3 overtime victory Tuesday against Rose Hill in the opening round of the Goddard Invitational.
The win came on penalty kicks after a scoreless overtime, where the Lady Buffs got three goals from Haley Brennaman, Amber Miller and Maria Rodririguez, while GCHS freshman goalkeeper Ashlee Richman made three saves to preserve the victory.
"I felt like we played well and this will help our confidence," GCHS head coach Joaquin Padilla said after his team had opened the season with a 5-0 loss to Wichita Northwest on March 14. "I thought Ashlee, for a freshman, performing the way she did in penalty kicks (3 saves) just did extremely well."
Garden City took a 1-0 lead at halftime when Brennaman scored on an unassisted goal in the 25th minute. The Lady Rockets tied the score in the 55th minute on an Emily Terrell goal. The Lady Buffs regained the lead in the 60th minute when Brennaman took a through ball from Megan Martinez and scored. But Rose Hill tied it again in the 72nd minute on an Ali Khalei goal.
That made it 2-2 heading into overtime, and after the extra period, the game went to penalty kicks, with the Lady Buffs dominating that part of the game. Terrell scored the only penalty kick for the Lady Rockets.
"We've got a number of little things to correct that we will work on in practice," Padilla said. "But overall, I thought the girls played well. We got good movement from our midfielders, and our defenders did a good job, too. We were able to move Haley around to put her in good positions to score. At times, we were a little too anxious to try and score so we need to be a little more patient with our attacking."
Richman was key to the win, as she came up with two saves in the regulation time before fending off three of the four penalty kicks by the Rockets. The Lady Buffs finished the game with 10 shots on goal.
The Lady Buffs will play in the semifinals of the invitational at 7 p.m. Thursday against the winner of Tuesday's late game between Bishop Carroll and Buhler.
