Buffs' golfers improve, take 4th at Hays

A 24-hour time difference and a golf course that was more user-friendly provided the Garden City Buffaloes' boys team an opportunity to improve their team score by 20 shots en route to a fourth-place finish among 12 teams at Tuesday's Bob Blazer/Hays High Invitational at Smoky Hill Country Club.

The Buffs went from a 360 team score on Monday at the Manhattan Invitational to a 340 total on Tuesday, finishing behind Hutchinson (326), Dodge City (331) and Hays High (333). The Buffs were just in front of Goodland's 342.

Leading the way for the Buffs were a pair of freshmen — Taylor Larsen with a 77 and Logan Durst with an 84. Larsen's 77 was good for runner-up medalist honors, finishing three shots behind Dodge City's Levi Bone, who shot a 74.

"Taylor played much better, and yet he got off to a rough start," GCHS coach Walker Frey said. "He was four over through five holes and finished six over for the day, so that's a great way to hold a score together."

Larsen's nine-hole totals were 40-37 while Durst had nines of 43-41. Next was Connor Schultz with an 87 (46-41), Tucker Schiffelbein with a 92 (45-47), Tristan Corrales with a 95 (47-48) and Austin Swender with a 97 (51-48).

"Logan continues to improve, too and if you take our four 3-putts and a quad, Connor would have been right around 80," Frey said. "If we keep improve we'll be right where we want to be by regional."

The Buffs continue their busy week with a 2 p.m. Thursday tournament at Dodge City's Mariah Hills Golf Course.
