The Garden City High School Buffaloes baseball team loaded the bases in the final inning of the opener of Friday's doubleheader at a talented Wichita Heights squad, but were unable to complete the late comeback.

The Buffs entered the inning down 9-4, and took advantage of several walks and a hit batsman to score a pair of runs with nobody out and the bases still jacked. But an infield fly, a strikeout and a fly out ended the Buffs' upset bid, 9-6.

"We knew we were going to face a really quality club, and they were," Buffs head coach Bill Wilson said a telephone interview after the twin billing. "We had a real good opportunity there in the first game."

After the opportunity slipped by, the Falcons made quick work of the nightcap, mercy-ruling the Buffs 15-0 in three innings.

"...the second game got out of hand," Wilson said. "They're a very good hitting team. We didn't challenge them much in the second game. We're young."

With the pair of losses, the Buffs drop to 1-3 early in the season.

Thomas Solorio was hung with the loss in the first game after allowing seven runs, four earned, in three innings pitched. He struck out two. Solorio did provide a lot of the Buffs' offensive power, though, driving in three on 2 of 3 at the plate, including a double.

Marcus Zapata was also 2 of 3, driving in one and scoring twice. Ivan Gutierrez finished the game on the mound, tossing three innings with no earned runs.

The Buffs committed seven errors, while the Falcons had just one.

In the finale, the Falcons scored six quick runs in the first, five in the second and four in the third for the three-inning rout.

Daven Acker took the loss.

The Buffs open their home schedule at 4 p.m. Tuesday when they take on Thomas-More Prep. It will be the first time the Buffs take the field at the newly renovated Clint Lightner Stadium.
