Derby boys too much for Buffaloes

DERBY — Garden City High School boys basketball coach Jeff Tanner can stomach the type of losses such as Saturday's 76-52 defeat at the hands of No. 4-ranked Derby — it's losses like Friday night's to Hays, that he can't stand.

"I liked our fight against them," Tanner said. "I felt we competed a lot better than we did (against Hays), defended a lot better and executed offensively much better than we did (Friday) night. So we've got to think, had we played like this Friday night maybe we get a different result then.."

Garden City kept with Derby, who was riding a nine-game winning streak, through the first quarter and a half — actually trailing by just four with about four minutes before halftime. But then a five-minute delay in action — due to a metal cover popping up from the court — gave the athletic Derby squad a breather before going on a 23-8 run to close out the first half.

"Certainly what you don't want is them to catch their breath," Tanner said. "When they do, they're amazing."

It was that spurt that did in the Buffaloes and allowed the Panthers to coast to the victory.

In the second half, Garden City was only out-scored by five points (29-24), with the Buffs actually winning the third quarter (18-16).

"We only lost the second half by five points, so we did much better," Tanner said. "But again, we've got to learn from it and take a step forward. We've got to be consistent."

Junior Cody Bernbeck led Garden City in scoring with 15 points — but 10 of those points came in the first half and the other five came in the third quarter. Also reaching double-digits for Garden City was senior Patrick Garcia, who finished the game with 12 points to go with a game-high six rebounds.

The issue for Garden City defensively was not being able to stop Derby's Cameron Cornelius, a 5-foot-11 junior. Cornelius ended the night with a game-high 24 points, while hauling in four rebounds — three on the offensive end.

"He's 5-11 and plays like he's about 6-7," Tanner said of Cornelius. "You would never guess how big he is because he hit threes, he got rebounds and stick-backs.."

Garden City is scheduled to host Ulysses tonight at about 7:15 p.m. — a game that was postponed from Jan. 29.
