Garden City High School wrestler Colt McElroy was arrested Monday on allegations of aiding a felon, felony obstruction of official duty, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal use of weapons.
McElroy, a junior who is 27-5 on the season and was ranked No. 6 in Class 6A at 119 pounds going into last weekend's Rocky Welton Invitational, was the Buffaloes' lone individual champion Saturday night at the home tournament. It's unclear, at this point, how his arrest will affect his status on the team.
"All I can tell you is that it's a discipline matter," GCHS athletics director Bill Weatherly said. "I can't comment on it. Any comment that comes from us will come from Roy Cessna (public information coordinator for the school district)."
Cessna also declined comment.
"We don't have any comment on the status of a student for disciplinary measures," Cessna said.
GCHS wrestling coach Monte Moser said he couldn't comment on the matter.
"I've just been told not to say anything at this time," Moser said.
While school officials wouldn't comment on or confirm McElroy's status, according to USD 457 policy, if a student is accused of committing a felony, whether there has been an adjudication or conviction, then the student shall be ineligible to participate in any school-sponsored activity or sport for the current school year or the next school year, if the act occurs prior to an upcoming fall semester.
The district policy also states that a student whose character or conduct, in or outside of school, brings discredit to the school or to the student, is not a student in good standing and is ineligible for the remainder of the sports season or until such time as the matter of discredit is cleared up.
The investigation that led to McElroy's arrest began Sunday, when Garden City police received a call from the Greeley County Sheriff's Office regarding a stolen car that had been seen at Wal-Mart in Garden City, said Garden City police Sgt. Michael Reagle.
"We found the vehicle, and the vehicle fled," Reagle said. "There was a pursuit of the vehicle, and it stopped, with two people getting out of the car."
Reagle said that driver of the car continued on after two passengers got out of the car, and police didn't pursue the vehicle. McElroy, 17, was one of the passengers, Reagle said. The driver of the car was identified as Trevor Lowell McGraw, 21, 2401 W. Kansas Ave., Lot 323, according to Reagle. Upon getting the identity of the driver, both McElroy and the other passenger, whom police would not identify, were released.
On Monday, Garden City police received a tip that led them to 2313 N. Seventh St., where they found the stolen car, a 2006 Ford Mustang. While there, they found McGraw and arrested him at 11:26 a.m. on allegations of felony possession of stolen property, felony obstruction of official duty, felony fleeing and attempting to elude police, endangering a child, two counts of driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
McElroy was also at the Seventh Street residence and was arrested at 11:27 a.m. on allegations of aiding a felon, felony obstruction of official duty, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal use of weapons. Police found 1.8 grams of marijuana at the residence.
According to Reagle, when police arrived at the home, McElroy was in the driveway. When asked about McGraw's whereabouts, McElroy allegedly told officers that McGraw was not at the address. Upon further search, McGraw was found inside the residence, Reagle said.
Reagle said officers found a pair of brass knuckles and an axe handle with tape around it in the vehicle that McElroy was in possession of just prior to the time of the arrest.
The GCHS wrestling team, which was ranked No. 1 in Class 6A going into last weekend's Welton Invitational, is scheduled to return to action Thursday with a triangular against Hays and Great Bend at The Garden.

Idiots all of ya
First let me address the issue of the air soft gun thing. The problem with that situation is they tried to sweep it under the carpet. Second who sayd everything that was written in the paper was correct, Have you seen the affidavit?? Third it dont matter if this kid has been in any trouble in the past for anything, that if frankly no ones business. This whole thing we have going in this city makes me sick. Publish everything and then spread more rumors on it. It is no wonder no one wants to move into this city. We are the gossip capital od sw Kansas.

re:equals
the weopon in question was an AIRSOFT gun. it's a toy. However, illegal drugs are not toys, obstructing justice is not a game. AND this isn't the first time for this kid. He's had second chances, yes plural. His school records alone should have disqualified him from extracurricular activities.

WOW
I find it amazing that a High School athlete gets arrested and we get details but a police officer shoots a guy thats stabbing his wife and we get 2 paragraphs. Welcome to GC!!!

re:equals
as long as he keeps winning RIGHT. If he was a loser on the mat instead of a human being, you would have a different opinion. However, we should keep giving athletes second chances, example, Lawrence Phillips.
