The Garden City Community College Board of Trustees moved forward Wednesday with plans to handle internally the search for a permanent college president.
The trustees agreed to form a subcommittee that will be responsible for drafting a job description and developing advertising for the vacant president position. The subcommittee, comprised of interim president Joseph Emmons, trustees Ron Schwartz and Terri Worf, and one to two others, will modify an existing job description and present the trustees with a draft at the next meeting.
Following the June resignation of former president Carol Ballantyne, the college utilized the Association of Community College Trustees to find an interim president. Emmons was selected as the interim president and began serving on the campus Aug. 10.
In prior meetings, the board had considered using ACCT in the search for a permanent president, but trustees moved forward with an in-house search Wednesday.
Though a specific timeline has not been set, board chairman Bill Clifford said he hopes a selection can be made in early 2011. GCCC's last presidential search took about six months.
"The clock is ticking, and it's moving pretty fast," Clifford said.
Though the college will conduct the search directly, a contracted service may be utilized to check backgrounds and references after potential candidates are identified, Schwartz said.
GCCC also conducted unassisted searches when Ballantyne was hired in 2000 and when her predecessor, James Tangeman, was chosen as president in 1988.
"I think it's probably the right choice because that's how we've done it in the past, and it's worked out for us," Steve Quakenbush, director of information services, said.
Later in the search process, input from students and community members will be used to assist in the selection process.
