Busters advance to Wichita with sweep of Independence





Game 1

Kadin Hydrick had his first home run and third double of the season to drive in four runs for the Garden City Community College baseball team in a 10-8 Game 1 win over Independence in a KJCCC sub-regional series at Williams Stadium.

Hydrick led off the fifth inning with a solo shot to right to give the Busters a 6-3 lead, and then after the Pirates cut it to 6-5, Hydrick slugged a three-run double down the right field line in the sixth for the 9-5 advantage.

JJ Benes picked up the win despite a rocky start, giving up six runs on 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven as he moved to 8-3. TJ Clapper recored the four-out save for the Busters, his second.

Game 2

Rocky Desantis hit a two-run home run in the first and the Busters batted around in the second inning for six runs to take a commanding 8-3 lead en route to a 9-5 win in Game 2 of the KJCCC sub-regional at Williams Stadium.

Starter Chris Bonk was solid in six innings of work, giving up five runs, three earned, while striking out five, to maintain his perfect record at 10-0. Desantis finished 1 of 4, but scored twice. Tyler Alitz was 3 for 4.

The Busters chased Pirates starter Matt Wasche in two innings, charging him with eight runs on eight hits and two walks.

Jake Eikleberry tossed two scoreless innings for the Busters in relief of Bonk before Austin Aspegren came in for the ninth to clinch the win and the sweep.

The Busters move on to face the winner of Coffeyville and Barton in the first round of the Region VI championship tournament in Wichita on Friday, time to be determined.
