Busters drop final two games at Midland

The Garden City Community College softball team may have lost its last two games at the Midland College Classic in Midland, Texas, on Saturday, but it left feeling much better than after dropping three on Friday.
The Lady Broncbusters lost 6-5 to Western Texas, and 3-2 to Lubbock Christian (Texas)'s junior varsity.
"Two tough losses, but I think we had some plays and some things that happened in those games that we can really learn from, which is what that whole tournament was for," GCCC head coach Becky Holland said in a phone interview. "It's hard to have a good feeling when you lose, but I think we learned a lot from those games."
Garden City took a 2-1 lead in the fourth against LCU, getting a steal of home by Emilie Laliberte, and an RBI double from Kallie Hoover. LCU would tie it in the fifth on an error, then get a two-out RBI single in the seventh for a walk-off win.
Jocelyn Lopez pitched the complete game, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Against WTC, GCCC had a 5-0 lead after the top of the fifth, but allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. The Busters had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Hoover struck out looking to end the game.
Holland said the team played much better than it did on Friday, and if not for a couple missed plays and baserunning mistakes, might have come out with a pair of wins Saturday.
"We played a lot better yesterday," Holland said. "We had a lot of opportunities that we just didn't score, or didn't do what we needed to do to win."
Garden City is now 3-6 this season, and plays a 1 p.m/3 p.m. doubleheader Thursday against Pratt at the Tangeman Sports Complex to open the home schedule.
Now, GCCC just has to take the lessons learned in Texas and make sure they stick going forward.
"Let's take that back home, and let's get ready to open up at home," Holland said. "I know all of our girls are excited, they're excited to have their friends in the community come out and (see them) play."
