Getting an open date last week did little to change the fortunes of the Garden City Community College men's basketball team, as it dropped its fifth straight game.
The Broncbusters were down by as many as 23 points in a 69-55 loss to the Butler Grizzlies on Saturday in El Dorado.
"Very lackluster first half," GCCC head coach Rand Chappell said in a phone interview. "We turned the ball over too much, missed free throws, didn't guard very well. Just a lot of silly mistakes that you can't make on the road against a pretty good basketball team."
Butler's press forced Garden City (10-13, 2-7 KJCCC) into 17 turnovers, including 10 in the first half. The Grizzlies had a 39-21 lead at the break. It was a 13-7 game with 12 minutes, 31 seconds left in the first, but Butler (17-6, 5-4) finished the half on a 26-14 run.
"We did not handle the press very well early in the game, and didn't get to a very good place — besides turning it over some, they rushed us offensively," Chappell said.
Sophomore guard Frank Agholor had 18 points, his best output since scoring 22 in an upset of Barton on Jan. 9. He averaged 5.4 points in the five games in between.
"I guess two things," Chappell said. "The one thing that he did, that we've been talking about some, is he's gotta get to the foul line. He was 8-for-8 at the foul line, so that gives you a lift right there. He made mid-range jump shots, which is good, we need that. At the same time, we need the assist-to-turnover thing to be better, and make a few better decisions. At least in one phase of the game, there was some improvement."
Chappell changed his lineup in the game, as well, starting Terry Webb over the slumping Chris Hall. Webb went 4-of-9 on 3-pointers and finished with 15 points.
"I felt we needed to mix it up a little bit," Chappell said. "Chris has been struggling shooting the ball. You hope with two point guards in the game, you take a little pressure off Frank from a ball-handling standpoint."
Forward Joe Ebondo came down bad on his left ankle and had to come out of the game.
Garden City hosts No. 1 Hutchinson at the Perryman Athletic Complex at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. In the teams' first meeting, the Busters lost, 65-58.
