Busters fade in loss to Conquistadors

For the most part, when the Garden City Community College men's basketball team plays well, it plays really well.
And when it plays poorly, it plays quite poorly.
For a brief spurt, the Broncbusters played really well, but the short stretch of poor play that followed doomed them in a 64-45 loss to Dodge City in their home finale on Saturday at the Perryman Athletic Complex.
"When it collapsed, it collapsed big," GCCC head coach Rand Chappell said.
Down by 10 with 13 minutes, 54 seconds left to play, Chris Hall and Frank Agholor helped cut the Busters' deficit to four, at 41-37, after Hall finished a drive for a basket and drew a foul at the 11:44 mark.
Hall missed the free throw, and it took just under two minutes for Dodge City to go on a 9-0 run to make it 50-37 on a Vic Adams floater.
It took another two minutes for Garden City (11-18, 3-12 KJCCC) to score again, Reuben King's jumper making it 52-39. By the 5:14 mark, it was a 20-point lead for Dodge City (14-15, 6-9).
"I don't remember the sequence of plays exactly," Chappell said. "We worked pretty hard to get it back to four, but when it went to eight, we seemed to really drop our heads. I'd have to watch the tape. It looked like to me, we had a lack of effort in two or three spots. When you're playing at the college level, and you don't have 100 percent effort, then usually good things don't happen."
In the four minutes between Hall's basket to cut it to 41-37 and King's jumper, Garden City turned it over twice and missed four shots in their six possessions.
Credit Dodge City for taking advantage. The Conqs were 8-of-11 from the field to start the second half, making up for their 17 turnovers up to that point. DCCC finished the game 8-of-15 from 3-point range, and every Conq who attempted a 3-pointer made one.
Adams led all scorers with 15 points, and had two 3-pointers. Jacoby Green was 3-of-3 from behind the arc en route to 13 points, and three other Conqs had at least seven points.
"When they were able to collapse our defense and kick it out, they had open looks, and different guys knocked them down," Chappell said.
Garden City was just 2-of-15 from behind the arc, both coming from Hall, who had a team-high 12 points. Agholor added 11, and King had 10. Aside from a short stretch when Garden City attempted its comeback in the second, the Busters couldn't take advantage of Dodge City's turnovers, 10 in the first half and 17 by the 8:57 mark — but just one more the rest of the way for a total of 18.
Forward Jade Cathey, who averages 13.6 points per game, was held to seven, as the Conqs collapsed on him when the ball was fed into the post.
"I think that if you scout us, the one thing that looks good on the scouting report is Jade Cathey's shooting percentage," Chappell said. "I think every time the ball went inside, they collapsed super hard, and dared us to shoot from the perimeter."
The Busters didn't get any points from forwards Arkeem Joseph and Mike Chandler, but Joe Ebondo returned from a two-game absence to score three points and nab a game-high seven rebounds.
"It was nice to have him back," Chappell said. "He's practiced basically all week. We felt like there was really no restrictions. I think he had just an OK game. But it was nice to have him back in the lineup."
The first half was ugly for Garden City, which just 10 points over the first 16:30 of the game, en route to a 29-19 halftime deficit.
The Busters finish their regular season in a rescheduled game with Seward County, at 8 p.m. Monday in Liberal. Winter Storm Q gave Garden City a week between games, and seemed to hamper any momentum GCCC might have gotten from its win over Cloud County on Feb. 16.
"There's no excuse," Chappell said. "We're 20-something games into the season; you've gotta play good basketball."

Next Season
There will be some tough decisions on what players to bring back. They better "bust" it in the off-season.
