"Wild, Wild West" will be the theme when more than 100 volunteers stage the 35th Annual Garden City Community College Endowment Association Scholarship Auction, starting at 6 p.m. April 5 at the Finney County Exhibition Building.

The auction usually attracts more than 1,000 people for an evening of entertainment and competitive bidding. The 34th annual event in 2012 raised more than $192,000 to fund GCCC student scholarships and academic projects, according to GCCC.

Admission will be by wristband for the fifth straight year, and the cost will be $25 per person. Wristbands won't be sold at the door as admission must be purchased in advance.

The doors will open to wristband wearers at 6 p.m. the evening of the sale, with the 300-item silent auction starting at 6:30 p.m., and the 100-item main event live auction, conducted by Scott Auction of Garden City, getting under way at 7:30 p.m.

The admission wristbands will go on sale starting Feb. 15 at the Endowment Association office in the GCCC Student and Community Services Center. Association board members and key local businesses also will have tickets available, including Keller Leopold Insurance, 302 Fleming St.; Kinney Glass, 415 N. Eighth St.; Goldworks, 1005 N. Main St.; Skeeter's Body Shop, 3104 W. Jones Ave.; and Lewis Motors, at Campus Drive and Fulton St.

The association also is conducting a donation drawing for a 2013 Cadillac ATS. Tickets for the drawing will be available at the same locations as the wristbands for a suggested donation of $50. The winner's name will be drawn at the conclusion of the auction, whether or not he or she is present.

The radiant silver sport sedan, just named the North American Car of the Year by a jury of 49 automotive journalists, will be on display at Lewis Motors the month of March. Valued at $34,400, the 2013 Cadillac ATS features rear-wheel drive, a 202-horsepower, 2.5-liter direct-injection four cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, 17-inch aluminum wheels, heated seats, keyless push-button ignition, dual automatic climate control with automatic moisture detection and defog, a Bose premium seven speaker audio system, and various other additional features.

Businesses and individuals throughout southwest Kansas are donating goods, funds and services for the auction, and anyone with contributions or questions about the event, or about sponsorship or volunteer opportunities, may contact the association at 276-9578. That is also the number for table reservations of six persons or more. In addition, information is available at www.gcccendowment.org.

Beth Tedrow and Terry Lee of Garden City are the volunteer coordinators for auction items and gifts. Melissa Savolt and Renee Cornett-Wallace of Garden City are the auction planning coordinators.
