Busters fall in 12th inning to No. 5-ranked Lamar, 4-3

The Garden City Community College baseball team's second bout with No. 5 Lamar (Colo.) went much better than the first meeting, but still resulted in a loss.
The Broncbusters went to 12 innings with the Runnin' Lopes on the road Tuesday before Shane Fessel's RBI double gave Lamar a 4-3 win.
It was a much different game than Garden City's 11-1 loss last Wednesday at Williams Stadium.
Garden City tied the game at three in the top of the fourth, and the teams traded zeros until Connor Crane scored on Fessel's one-out double off Josh Thomas in the 12th.
The Busters threatened in the eighth, getting a pair of two-out singles from Alex Buechler and Rocky Desantis. Kevin Czarnecki's bunt resulted in an out, and Buechler was tagged out at home. Garden City didn't manage another baserunner the rest of the game.
On the other hand, Lamar couldn't do much against Garden City's pitching, either. From the fourth through 11th innings, the Lopes managed just two baserunners on a single and a Busters error. Seven of Lamar's 10 hits came in the first three innings.
Starter Josh Heifner went four innings, allowing three runs, all earned, on six hits, a walk and a strikeout. Jake Eikleberry, Garrett Bryant and Colton Kibler combined to pitch seven shutout innings, with Kibler the only one to allow a hit, with 10 total strikeouts. Thomas (1-2) took the loss, giving up one run on two hits in 1/3 an inning.
Lamar's Kyle Tinius got the win, pitching clean 11th and 12th innings for the Lopes.
Down 3-1, the Busters tied the game in the fourth. Czarnecki singled and Marcus Brown was hit by a pitch, with the runners moving up on Chris Lobato's sacrifice bunt. Czarnecki scored on a wild pitch by Silas Morris, and Nick Ragias hit an RBI single to tie it 3-3.
Lamar went up 3-1 in the third on a sacrifice fly and RBI double.
Ragias was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Desantis was 2-for-5 as well, as Garden City combined for 11 hits.
In addition to a four-game series to start the season against then-No. 1 Iowa Western, Garden City is 1-5 against teams ranked in the top five in the nation, although four of those were one-run games.
The Busters (11-13) were scheduled to play at Clarendon College (Texas) at 1 p.m. today.
