The Garden City Community College women's volleyball team fell to the Colby Trojans in straight sets Wednesday night in its Jayhawk Conference opening match at Colby.
GCCC coach Amber Jay's squad dropped sets by scores of 25-9, 25-15 and 25-19.
The loss drops the Lady Busters early season record to 0-6 (0-1 in conference).
"We did improve from our weekend tournament in Lamar," Jay said of her team's Wednesday performance. "We kind of got a slow start, but after the first game, I thought we showed that we could play with them and the scores were much closer."
Jay said that the second and third sets were much better contested and that her team's defense was steadily improving.
"In the third game, we got off to a good start," Jay said. "We were leading by a point or two. Colby would come back and then tie it."
The Busters stayed even with Colby in the third set, until the Trojans broke a 17-all tie by scoring eight of the final 10 points.
"The defense was getting to the right spots, and we had worked a lot on it during Monday and Tuesday practices," Jay said. "That's where we're going to have to play well to keep us in the games. We don't have the height to compete that strongly on offense right now."
The Busters return to Colby on Friday for the Colby Invitational. They are scheduled to play North Platte (Neb.) Community College at 5 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, they will play at 10:30 a.m. against Otero Community College of LaJunta, Colo., and at 2:30 p.m. against McCook (Neb.) Community College. The Busters will return to Garden City and play their home opener at 6:30 p.m. Monday against Trinidad State (Colo.).
