Colby sweeps past Lady Busters' volleyball in three

The Garden City Community College volleyball team was forced to watch as Colby celebrated their straight-set sweep of the Lady Busters on Tuesday night at the Perryman Athletic Complex, which clinched at least a share of the regular season Jayhawk Conference Western Division title for the Lady Trojans.
The Lady Trojans (11-1, 22-7) were led by sophomore outside hitter Lorena Rosario, who drilled 11 kills and five aces, en route to the 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 rout of the Lady Busters (3-9, 7-19). Earlier in the week, head coach Harvey Sanders noted that Colby's physicality might be difficult for his team to overcome. It seemed that way on Tuesday.
"The net play I thought was okay," the first-year coach said. "I think we blocked well. I think we took care of their hitters, for the most part, like we should have. Velocity from the service line was a little bit more than we expected — that was where we sort of had our problems."
Rosario's slicing jump serve seemed to be at the root of the Lady Busters' serve receive problems in the sweep, racking up the five aces and several more points when she was serving.
"We kind of knew who she was," Sanders said with a slight smile about Rosario.
For the Lady Busters, Dominique Mays led with five kills, while Chinasa Ekweariri led in blocks with six. The match was the last regular season home contest of the season for the Lady Busters, who will now travel to Dodge City at 6:30 p.m. Thursday for the final KJCCC matchup of the season. Wrapping up the play before the post-season will be a non-conference match with Otero (Colo.) in Liberal on Oct. 29.
