Split 'em: Lady Busters open KJCCC

The Garden City Community College Lady Broncbusters opened their conference schedule on Thursday afternoon in Colby, splitting a doubleheader with the Lady Trojans.

The split was not what head coach Becky Gundy was looking to accomplish in the openers.

"We greatly underachieved (Thursday)," Gundy said in a text message after the game. "As a team, we have a lot of growing up we need to do if we want to compete where we should in this conference."

The Busters dropped the first game of the twinbilling, 2-1, before rebounding in the nightcap for the 10-3 win, bringing the Busters' record to 8-7 and 1-1 in conference.

Rachel Roe's complete-game, three-hitter outing was wasted in the loss, as she struck out six and only walked one. The two runs scored were unearned as the Lady Trojans scored in the second and third innings off of errors by the Busters.

The Lady Busters scored their lone run in the fifth, when Taylor Supino reached first on a passed ball after a strikeout, and Alex Barleen singles two batters later to bring Supino in.

The Busters could only manage four hits off Colby starter Natalie Elmgreen, who picked up the complete-game win, striking out two, walking three and allowing only the one run.

Barleen had a pair of singles for the Busters, while Danielle Aronoff doubled and Mattie Miller singled.

In the nightcap, the Busters' bats came alive, with four batters with at least two hits, accumulating 11 as a team for the 10 runs. The Busters knocked out Elmgreen after four innings, while Jessica Soliday was solid in her complete-game win, striking out two, walking none and allowing one earned run (two unearned).

Miller led the way at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs. Brooke Lovas was 2 for 5 from the leadoff spot with three runs scored and two RBIs, including reaching on an error in the first and coming around to score on Miller's double two batters later to get the Busters started.

After a three-run first, the Lady Trojans were never closer than 3-1.

The Busters return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday with a twinbilling against Trinidad, Colo., Community College at the Tangeman Sports Complex.
