A Garden City man was injured Friday afternoon in Hodgeman County, after his semitrailer caught fire in a crash.

At 12:40 p.m. Friday, Humberto Calderon, 19, Garden City, was driving north on County Road 210 between C Road and D Road in Hodgeman County, about 12.5 miles north of U.S. Highway 50. A Ford truck driven by Clifford W. Kiehl, 50, Bucklin, was headed south, and the vehicles struck head-on in the center of the roadway, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Calderon's truck caught fire, left the roadway, went into the east ditch and struck a fence post and barbed wire fence. The truck and the fence post were destroyed by the fire, but Calderon was able to escape the burning vehicle.

He was transported by Hodgeman County EMS to Hodgeman County Health Center, then later airlifted to Via Christi Health System's St. Francis Campus in Wichita. According to Via Christi, Calderon was released from the hospital.

Kiehl's truck also left the roadway, landing in the west ditch, and caught fire, according to KHP. Kiehl was caught in the vehicle and was extricated by Hodgeman County EMS, then taken to Hodgeman County Health Center. The hospital wouldn't release information about his condition.

Kiehl was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to KHP. It is unknown whether Calderon was wearing a seat belt because the vehicle had been burned.
