G.C. man charged with second-degree murder

A Garden City man accused of killing a man has been charged with second-degree murder and other felony charges.

Lucas K. Chavez, 24, 2615 N. Main St., Apt. 6F, made his second appearance in court Monday afternoon at the Finney County Courthouse. He was charged with second-degree murder and two charges of criminal possession of a firearm during a Feb. 11 first-appearance hearing.

Chavez was arrested Feb. 2 in connection with the shooting death of another Garden City man, Phillip Maurice Brown, 30.

Police found Brown shot outside the apartment where Chavez lived at Apple Garden Apartments in the early morning hours on Feb. 1. Brown was taken to St. Catherine Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.

Friends said Brown moved to Garden City last spring from Chicago to work at the Tyson Fresh Meats plant near Holcomb. He started working at the plant in late April, according to human resource officials from the plant.

It is believed the shooting occurred because Chavez was upset with Brown for making advances toward his girlfriend, said Garden City police Sgt. Michael Reagle.

The prosecutor in the case is Assistant County Attorney Brian Sherwood. Chavez is represented by a court-appointed public defender.

A preliminary hearing has been set for 9 a.m. April 9 at the Finney County Courthouse. Chavez is being held on a $1.2 million bond at the Finney County Jail.
