Fairs, community celebrations on tap

Southwest Kansas residents have several fairs, as well as the Deerfield Days and Summer Celebration, to choose from on Friday and through the weekend.

Kearny County's fair lasts through Friday, the Hamilton County Fair runs through Saturday and the Scott County Fair goes until Sunday.

On Friday, Kearny County's fair will include showmanship contests starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Kearny County Fairgrounds. The fair's concluding day continues with a 4-H concession stand special meal at noon, bingo from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., fish races at 3 p.m., free barbecue at 6 p.m., duck drop at the driving range of the golf course at 6:45 p.m. and 4-H and FFA livestock sale at 7:30 p.m.

Deerfield Days' night activities Friday include mud volleyball and a slip and mud slide at 6:30 p.m. in Boy Scout Park; and a home run derby at 7 p.m. at the baseball field.

Activities fill Saturday for Deerfield Days, with the celebration kicking off with the Commerce Bank breakfast at 6 a.m. at the town's Community Center; art show from 8 a.m. to noon at the Community Center; deer art silent auction starting at 6 a.m. at the Community Center; fun run/walk, 7:30 a.m. and quarter-mile kids race, 9 a.m., both at Community Center; motorcycle run, 9:25 a.m.; parade, 9:30 a.m. on Main Street; fire truck rides, 10:30 a.m. at firehouse; Anderson Family Dancers, 10:30 a.m. at firehouse; Lee Richardson Zoo Show, 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.; toad beauty pageant, 10:45 a.m. and turtle races at 11 a.m. in Firehouse Park; and Fiddlers & Pickers, 12:30 p.m. at park shelter.

Activities continue through Saturday for Deerfield Days with a dance, live music and deejay from 8:30 p.m. to midnight in the Deerfield High School parking lot and a fireworks display, 10 p.m. at the DHS football field.

The 2009 Scott County Free Fair includes Barnyard Olympics, 5 p.m., and grandstand entertainment of "He Wears Black," a Johnny Cash tribute band, 8 p.m., all Friday at the Scott County Fairgrounds. Saturday's activities include the first annual Beefiesta Throwdown, 8 a.m.; parade, 10 a.m.; tasting booths, noon; Kids Day, 2 p.m.; horseshoe pitching, 2 p.m.; auctioneer calling contest, 5 p.m.; livestock/foods auction, 6:30 p.m.; ranch rodeo, 7 p.m.; and fair dance, 9:30 p.m. The demolition and pickup derby is 7 p.m. Sunday.

The Hamilton County Fair includes the beef show and round robin, 9 a.m.; antique tractor threshing demonstration, 2 p.m.; 4-H youth silent auction, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; 4-H barbecue, 4:30 p.m.; 4-H livestock auction, 5:30 p.m.; carnival daze, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and antique tractor pull, 7 p.m., all on Friday.

Saturday's events are Ag Days barbecue contest, 8 a.m.; parade, 10 a.m.; sand volleyball tournament, 12:30 p.m.; horseshoe tournament, 1 p.m.; fun and nonsense games, 2:30 p.m.; free barbecue, 5 p.m.; ranch rodeo, 7 p.m.; and Spanish dance, 9 p.m.

Other weekend events include:

  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Celebration and Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Independent Living, 1802 E. Spruce St. The celebration includes the health and wellness fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; free hot dogs, chips, drinks, popcorn and cotton candy at noon; a 19th anniversary of the passage of ADA cake cutting celebration from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and drawings by center staff from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., with the community eligible.
  • the Garden City Municipal Band concert at 8 p.m. Friday in Stevens Park.
  • community theater performance of Godspell Junior (a youth musical) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Clifford Hope Auditorium, Garden City High School, 1412 N. Main St. Performances continue Saturday at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at GCHS. Adult tickets are $10. For more information, contact the Garden City Recreation Commission at 276-1200.
  • Garden City Farmers Market from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot of Westlake Ace Hardware at the corner of Fleming Street and Harding Avenue.
  • iQ Academy Kansas, an online school open to students grades seven through 12, invites families to an open house from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the meeting room of the Hampton Inn, 2505 Crestway Drive, to learn more about the school’s open enrolment process and opportunities available through online education.   • the Southwest Jamboree featuring the Cimarron Fiddlers, Pickers & Singers is planned from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Senior Center, 221 S. Main St., in Cimarron. The free event is open to the public, with those attending encouraged to bring finger foods to share during the breaks. Small donations are also welcome to help with the costs of renting the building.
  • the Finney County Fair 4-H horse show will start at 8 a.m. Saturday in the grandstand arena of the Finney County Fairgrounds. The open category starts at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to the public for viewing.
  • the band “Not Worthy” performs at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Stevens Park as part of the Stevens Park Concert Series.
