A Dighton teen was killed Friday night in Ellis County during a school trip when the vehicle she was riding in struck a deer and rolled.

Hope James, 16, was killed at the scene, according to school officials.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports Christopher Johnson, 28, was driving a 2004 GMC Yukon eastbound on I-70 in Ellis County when he swerved to miss a deer. The vehicle hit the deer, Johnson overcorrected and the vehicle rolled onto its top and hit a fence.

Rebecca Harmison, 15, Garden City, another passenger, was injured and taken to Hays Medical Center along with Wyatt Marsteller, 17, Dighton, and Ieasha Gray, 15, Dighton.

Johnson also was taken to Hays Medical Center.

According to the KHP, all occupants were wearing seat belts.
