Coin, stamp, gun and other artifact enthusiasts may find a collector's paradise at this weekend's Sand and Sage Rifle and Pistol Club's Annual Collectors Show. The program will feature all types of firearms, ammunition, reloading supplies, gun smiths, rocks, jewelry, stamps, antiques, crafts and other items on display.
Organizers said they are anticipating a few thousand attendees this year, as in previous years, for the 106 vendors coming from all parts of Kansas, its neighboring states and as far as New Mexico, said Bob Prewitt, who has been involved with the show for the last decade and a half.
"It's a fairly big deal in this part of the country," he said. "And, we've got a pretty good reputation of having a good show."
Vendors also plan to sell homemade candy, cakes and pies. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Finney County Exhibition Building at the fairgrounds. Admission is $4 for adults, $1 for children ages 12 to 16, and free for children younger than 12 who are accompanied by an adult.
Due to the presence and sale of guns, security guards will be posted at all times. Concessions also will be available.
Other events going on this weekend include:
n Quilters can gear up for this weekend's sixth annual Scott City Quilt Show at the Scott County Fairgrounds, just north of Scott City. The show will feature new quilting ideas and products, and vendors will hold demonstrations each hour on new quilting techniques.
Linda Tilton, the business owner of Scott City's Buttons and More, said she would be showcasing several new quilt kits, tools and fabric during the program. A few hundred quilt enthusiasts attend the program, and organizers are hoping for even more this year, said Jody Abel, a member of the Scott City Quilt Guild.
"We have some really beautiful quilts on display, and I hope people take the time to come out and see them," she said. "We have something for everyone."
The fair will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
n Garden City officials will be hosting a homeowner's community forestry workshop on Saturday at the Lee Richardson Zoo, 312 Finnup Drive.
