Most golf fans are familiar with the Ryder Cup match, which is held bi-annually between the United States and European teams. It is one of golf's grandest competitions and dates back to the 1920s.
On Friday, Garden City tees off its smaller and younger version of the event with the 11th Annual Brookover Cup, pitting teams of amateurs and the host professional against each other in match play format competition.
The Golf Club at Southwind captured last year's Brookover Cup with a 38.5-33.5 victory. That provided the private club team a 6-4 series advantage in the event which brings together most of the top golfers in Garden City and the surrounding area who play at one or both courses.
Southwind took advantage of the "home" course a year ago by jumping out to a 12.5-5.5 lead after Day 1, when the competition was played under the foursomes (alternate shot) format. It is a difficult format in that the two partners tee off on alternating holes, then alternate shots on each hole until the ball has been holed. This format will be utilized once again at Friday's opening day at Buffalo Dunes, with groups teeing off at 2:30 p.m.
"I've got some good players out of town, but we've still got a good team that will compete," said Ryan Martin, the professional at Southwind. "I think it's a little easier for my guys to go to Buffalo Dunes with the green speed, but we'll just go see how it works out."
On Saturday, with tee times starting at 9 a.m. at Southwind, the format will switch to four-ball (commonly but mistakenly called best-ball) which is where the better score of the two partners is used on each hole to match the better ball of their opponents. In match play, scoring is compiled by holes won and each team and singles match is worth three points (one for the front nine, one for the back nine and one for the total 18 holes). Singles matches will be played Sunday, starting at 9 a.m., at Buffalo Dunes.
Two years ago, when the Dunes hosted two of the three rounds, the public course team came away with a 27.5-20.5 victory. Since 2003, when Southwind won back-to-back matches, the teams have traded victories.
The match is named in honor and in memory of Earl C. Brookover Sr., whose vision in the 1970s led the donation of land south of Garden City and resulted in the construction of Buffalo Dunes Golf Course (1975) and Southwind (1979). The two courses, both rated highly in numerous national golf publications, annually host the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am.
The format and scoring for the Brookover Cup has changed through the years and the current scoring came into effect a year ago. There are 18 points available in each of the two team formats and 36 points available on the final day of singles matches.
