Garden City soccer player Erik Barragan, who had been the leading scorer last fall for Garden City High School's boys soccer team, has earned one of five spots for the May 9 to 12 National Finals of Sueno MLS 2013.

The nationally-televised player search is showcased on Univision Network's Republica Deportiva, the popular weekly Spanish-language sports show that chronicles the tryouts in a reality show within a show format.

Barragan was one of several Garden City Manchester Soccer Club players who attended a tryout in Denver on Saturday. More than 500 players from Kansas, Colorado, Texas, Nebraska and New Mexico competed for 30 spots to advance to the second round. David Amaro and Gilberto Tovar also had reached the second round.

The competition was being held by Major League Soccer and the Colorado Rapids.

The National Finals competition will be held at The Home Depot Center in Los Angeles. Barragan, the other four field players and one goalkeeper, will compete against 10 other finalists from tryouts held in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles. In addition, at least one of the players will be invited to train with the Rapids Academy team.

Barragan was the Buffaloes' leading scorer in the 2012 fall season with 19 goals.

and added 8 assists. He scored three goals in the regional championship while earning Telegram All-Area Fall Sports first team honors and was honorable mention all-state by the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association.
