ELKHART — Lawrence R. Smith, 87, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, in Elkhart.

ELKHART — Lawrence R. Smith, 87, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, in Elkhart.

He was born April 9, 1926, to W.C. "Bill" Smith and Adah F. Austin, in Palmyra, Mo.

A lifetime resident of Morton County, Mr. Smith was a rural mail carrier in Elkhart for 30 years.

He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1944 and had volunteered for military service before graduating. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Mr. Smith married Ruth Isom on Sept. 8, 1949 in Clayton, N.M. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Leanna Smith of Levelland, Texas, Lori Coles of Meade, and Melinda Smith of Wichita.; and two grandsons, Jamie Coles of Meade and Jason Coles of Sterling.

Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Elkhart Cemetery in Elkhart.

Memorials may be given to the Morton County Library or to any charity of choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.
