I.R. Martinez, 86, of Garden City, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
He was born May 12, 1927, in Ness City, to Nazario and Carmen Rodriguez Martinez. He graduated from Copeland High School in Copeland.
On Oct. 3, 1953, he married Josephine Valenzuela in Garden City. She died June 3, 2000. He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Raymond and Jay; and two sisters, Mikayla and Ruth.
Mr. Martinez was the owner of a painting business. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and had served on the Garden City Family YMCA Board of Directors. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He enjoyed coaching American Legion Baseball, and coaching sports at the YMCA and Garden City Recreation Commission. He also enjoyed dancing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Orlando Martinez of Wichita; three daughters, Belinda Martinez of Lubbock, Texas, and Amelia Sena and Alesia Martinez, both of Garden City; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.
